Team PSL Karting completed another series doubleheader recently as it was at the Jim Russell Karting Academy in Mont-Tremblant for the fourth race of the Quebec Championship and the sixth and final race of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship. The Jim Russell Karting Academy is also the home of the upcoming Canadian Nationals, and if the weekend was any indication, PSL drivers will once again fare well this August. The team began with two wins and seven podiums on Saturday, then followed by securing three ECKC class championships on Sunday.

 

One of the highlights of Saturday action was the performance of Winnipeg’s Daniel Burkett. The Western regular with Glover Brothers Racing was on hand at Tremblant to test for the upcoming National Championships, and landed on the DD2 podium in third with his debut performance.

 

 

"I felt great stepping onto the podium," Burkett said afterwards. "My coach Kevin Glover recommended I do the race in preparing for the Nationals, and when we didn’t have time to ship a Lewis Hamilton Kart he also recommended we go with PSL for the weekend as they have the best trackside support in Eastern Canada. We found working with them very easy, and they were great in getting us the parts we needed to succeed at the track. It actually turned out I had the highest finishing position of any CRG in DD2!"

 

The podium position was definitely part of a trend, as PSL had seven on the day in six different classes. Jeffrey Kingsley and Gianfranco Mazzaferro were both on the Mini-Max podium in first and third, Samuel Fontaine was second in Rotax Junior, Peter Courteau was third in Rotax Masters, and in Honda action Alex Gauthier won Senior and Sarah McKay was third in Junior.

 

Sunday was then more about securing championships, and Kingsley did that in the best way possible. Entering with Mini-Max one of just three classes yet to be decided, Kingsley swept the day to remove any potential threats. He took pole by almost a half-second and won the prefinal by over five to take a commanding points lead. He then jumped way out front early in the final and cruised to the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship crown. It was the third of the series for CRG, as Paul Carvalho had already secured the DD2 Masters Championship and Pier-Luc Ouellette had already taken the DD2 title from Mosport. With his championship, Ouellette will now represent Canada for a sixth time at the Max Challenge Grand Finals, this year to be held in Al Ain, the site where he won the Rotax World Championship in 2007.

 

 

Also turning in another strong drive in ECKC action was Alexandre Fortin in Rotax Junior. After qualifying fourth, he was sent wide at the start of the prefinal and fell all the way to the tail of a 30-kart field. Unfazed, he raced his way back toward the front - only to drop again after contact. He then started the final in P20, but charged all the way to the podium in the final, crossing in third. Also on the podium for PSL on Sunday was Masters driver Luc Sauriol. The former Masters World Champion was prepping for Nationals as well, where he will look to make a return to the Olympics of karting.
