Quebec Championship II, ECKC II - PSL Karting
Monday, June 13 2011
Team PSL Karting had one of its biggest team gatherings in history recently as both the Quebec Championship and Eastern Canadian Karting Championship met at Karting Trois-Rivieres for a pair of race starts. Team PSL Karting, PSL Atlantic, PSL Montreal and PSL Ontario combined to field thirty-four drivers, nearly all racing both the second round of the Quebec Championship on Saturday and the third round of the ECKC on Sunday. The group produced five pole positions, three class wins and twelve podiums before many of Canada’s best drivers packed and headed for home.
Four PSL drivers hit the podium on both days as Pier-Luc Ouellette, Marc-Antoine Cardin, Sarah McKay and Paul Carvalho were on the blocks representing three arms of the PSL empire: Ouellette and Cardin from Team PSL Karting, McKay from PSL Atlantic and Carvalho from PSL Ontario. Other podiums came from Jeffrey Kingsley, Austin Versteeg, Gianfranco Mazzaferro, and Alexander Gauthier.
After qualifying fourth on Saturday in a 23-kart field, Ouellette moved up a spot to third in the prefinal before taking the main by just over three seconds. He set the fastest lap in the field on his way to his first win of the weekend, but Sunday’s required much more work. After starting the day on pole, the DD2 drivers were the first to entertain the thoughts of dry tires and all of the drivers at the front played it safe staying on wets. It was the right choice for them, as the ECKC prefinals offer significant championship points, but those at the back bolted on dry tires and quickly jumped to the front. Ouellette then had to make his way through a number of karts in the final, and did so just in time - producing the winning move in the final set of corners on the last lap. The win also gave him a six-point lead in the ECKC Championship, a series that awards its champion with a spot on Rotax Max Team Canada.
Second place for Carvalho on Sunday means he, too, is leading an ECKC Championship, in his case the margin is five points in DD2 Masters. After qualifying fifth and advancing to fourth in the prefinal, Carvalho then took one more in the main event to score a podium and maintain his championship lead after two wins at Goodwood Kartways to begin the series. In his first start at PSL as he was learning the track a day earlier, the Masters DD2 drivers raced combined with the senior field. Carvalho started in P13, was P17 after the prefinal but made his way into the top ten in the final, finishing ninth. It was also second in Masters, giving him his first podium of the weekend and third-straight in Regional competition.
Cardin entered the PSL weekend sitting second in points after the opening of the Quebec Championship at ICAR, and now has two podiums from two starts after a third on Saturday. The PSL Junior driver had qualified in the same spot and fallen to fifth in the prefinal before storming back to podium position in the main and setting the fastest lap in the field in the process. He stood on the same podium spot Sunday after also coming forward in the main. Cardin spent much of the final in a three-way battle for the spot and emerged with it convincingly in the final laps.
Putting PSL Atlantic on the podium, McKay stood second both days in Honda Junior. Quickly recovered from an arm injury suffered at Goodwood, McKay was back pulling double-duty racing both Honda and Rotax Junior. After starting third in the Honda race Sunday, she spent much of the early stages working her way to second in a tight group before establishing the spot and running clear to the checkered flag.
